Launch of Cross-Border Natural Resource Tourism - Marketing Strategy

The launch of the cross-border Natural Resource Tourism Programme - Marketing Strategy took place on Thursday, 17th May in Caledon Courthouse. The Natural Resource Tourism Project is being delivered by the Blackwater Regional Partnership which works across the three councils of Armagh, Dungannon and Monaghan.

The tourism programme is a vital tool in promoting the sustainable use of the natural resource and the indigenous product while enhancing and safe-guarding the natural amenities and assets of the Blackwater area. This is about encouraging the local resident and the visitor to explore what exists on our own doorsteps and being proud to tell others of the beauty that exists. The Natural Resource Tourism project kindly received funding to the value of £1,096,250 part-financed by the European Union through the INTERREG IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the ICBAN Partnership.

Julie Ann Spence, Projects Officer of the programme said ‘the Blackwater Region is so beautiful, steeped in history that dates so far back, unspoilt in so many ways and has really been underexposed for many years. This is now prime time to reveal the region and rep the benefits tourism can bring both economical and socially. Within the programme we have a lot of work ahead this involves the developing a cycle trail, four eco trails, further walks development and much more in terms of promotion etc.

Guest speakers included Chair of Blackwater Regional Partnership, Cllr P Gildernew. During his speech he highlighted the clear vision of the partnership in helping to address the deficiencies caused in the region and from join-up development between the three councils we can help sustain a rural environment for all to enjoy’.

Ms Sammy Leslie from Castle Leslie, Co Monaghan also addressed to audience providing an overview of what has been happening at the estate and why it is importance that we all work together both public, private and voluntary in making the visitor want to visit again and again.

Mr Garret McGinity, Project Officer with ICBAN, the body who have provided funding through the INTERREG IIIA Programme for Ireland / Northern Ireland emphasised the great benefits the tourism sector can bring to the region and the excellent resources that exist.

The partnership commissioned IMS Consultants Ltd, earlier this year to undertake an analysis of the tourism assets and highlight the best direction forward in promoting the region as whole. Results have given a very true reflection and show a clear direction to be taken. Jan Todd from IMS commented on how surprise she was on the beauty that exists and was very encouraged by the commitment from all sectors.

The launch had been well supported by tourism officers, the private sector and community groups within the region.
